I also try to share a few links to new full-text documents that might be of interest
to an
information professional.

For example, here are a few headlines from the past week:

In her article "Common Elements of High Performing, High Poverty Middle
Schools" (Middle School Journal, March 2002), Susan Trimble reviews the
research and points to some common characteristics among a group of
high-poverty high-performing middle schools in southeast Georgia which were
the subjects of a three-year case study. During a three-year case study,
Trimble found that all the successful schools used a grant writer or a team
of grant writers who knew how to generate grant proposals that obtain
additional funds to implement reform initiatives; they used teams to do
their reform work, and they developed goals and used specific strategies to
meet their goals.

There are three book reviews, two articles and a cartoon in this month's
free issue available online at http://fno.org

1. The Medium is Not the Literacy (reproduced in full below)
By Jamie McKenzie http://fno.org/jun02/digitallit.html

McKenzie argues that the term "digital literacy" may not make
much sense. But the term is every where. Marketing or Verity?

2. The Internet and the Upper Elementary Classroom:
Making a Difference?
By Douglas W. Green Ed. D. and Thomas O'Brien Ph. D.
http://fno.org/jun02/impact.html

Green and O'Brien report some disappointing
but very interesting findings of an intimate study
of upper elementary classrooms' use of the Internet.

3. Review: "The Invisible Computer"
http://fno.org/jun02/invisiblereview.html
Laura Lewis reviews Donald Norman's book
about the way technology ought to be - truly helpful
and virtually invisible.

4. Review: "Teaching with Technology: Creating
Student-Centered Classrooms"
http://fno.org/jun02/teachingreview.html
Laura Lewis reviews the intriguing findings of the ACOT project
reported in this study by Sandholtz, Ringstaff, and Dwyer.

5. Review: "Bringing the Internet to School"
Reviewed by Jamie McKenzie
http://fno.org/jun02/bringreview.html

Two researchers (Janet Ward Schofield and
Ann Locke Davidson) report on the successes
and the frustrations of a forward thinking Pennsylvania
project aimed at bringing rich learning

-------------------- Brief Excerpt -------------------------------------

The Medium is
Not the Literacy

by Jamie McKenzie

 2002, Jamie McKenzie
all rights reserved.

The term "digital literacy" is often invoked by technology
cheerleaders and promoters as part of their "rapid change" mantra.
Things are moving so fast, the argument goes, that we need 21st.
Century skills and digital classrooms, digital schools and digital
frames of mind.

They would have us believe that what we did last year, the year
before and during the nineties, is now outmoded. Time for a literacy
upgrade! The new model. Literacy Version 2.0.

This pressure to adopt a digital lifestyle, a digital pedagogy and a
digital mental set is often a thinly disguised marketing effort aimed
at increasing sales of digital products and services at a time when
telecommunications companies have overbuilt the bandwidth and are
frustrated by low consumer demand. When value is lacking, they can
always try to sell life style, fashion and trend.

One network vendor at NECC 2002 was overheard pushing "rich media" -
read "fat files" demanding big bandwidth and robust networking
equipment. Most school people would rather think of rich media in
terms of rich and reliable content.

Now that the so-called New Economy and its dot.com revolution have
proven to be more speculation than reality, we turn to a so-called
New Literacy. It pays to remember the fate of computer literacy.
