Press Release from Tolerace.org

June 21, 2002 -- Half of approximately 6,000 languages currently spoken
worldwide are endangered, according to a recent report from the
United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization
In the United States, the demise of languages is being felt most strongly
among indigenous communities.
http://www.unesco.org/

Although hundreds of Native American languages were once spoken in what is
now the U.S., fewer than 150 of those languages have survived cultural
domination stemming from European conquest of the Americas. And every single
one of the remaining languages is in jeopardy. But Native American activists,
elders and educators are striking back by teaching indigenous languages and
the cultures they communicate to rising generations of American Indians.
Tolerance.org reports on the emerging movement for indigenous language survival.

Reviving Languages, Saving Cultures
Experts and educators alike say parents and immersion-style schools and camps
hold the most promise for rescuing dying Native American languages and for
reconnecting children with their cultures.

June 21, 2002 -- "Windtalkers," this summer's box office drama about World War II's
Navajo code talkers, may have brought the beauty of Native American
languages to the big screen, but in real life, many make up a growing list of
endangered tongues.

Here is a fascinating article.

Project Title: Rock Swap

Project Begin & End Dates: 8/28/02 to 9/30/02

Project Summary:
My third grade class will be studying rocks and minerals during the first month of
school. I am interested in swapping rocks with other classes in the country that may
be studying the same thing. The rocks needn't be large - golf ball size would be
great. Swapping would give us a great opportunity to check out rocks in other regions
of the country.

Project Title: Ask a Builder

Project Begin & End Dates: 6/23/02 to 6/30/03

Project Summary:
Project development is continuous starting June 23, 2002. Builders, Contractors, and
Trades associations who wish to be a part of educating young men and women contact Tim
Rogers at Ozarks Technical Community College, Springfield, Mo. Ask a Builder1

Title of Project: Ask a Builder
-------------------

Project Details
-------------------
Project Level: Basic

Curriculum Area: Technology, Vocational Education

Technologies Used: Email

Project Sponsor: University of Illinois, CTER Program

Full Project Description:
Students will use this site to enhance their understanding of the construction
industry. The site will provide access to builders from several regions around the
United States and English speaking countries, with knowledge in different areas of the
trades. For example, students who would like to know what other builders are being
paid in New York City, Las Vegas, or Seattle would email a builder from those areas,
asking for information. The contact person would then respond to the question, with an
email addressed to the student. The site will also include the links to the
Occupational Outlook Handbook, job postings, and industry webpages.

Objectives:
Students will be able to link to Construction experts from around the United States
and English speaking countries, thus, realizing the potential of networking.
