Teacher Training: Too Much or Not Enough?

By Jay Mathews

First the Bush administration pushes through an education bill that calls
for guaranteeing a "highly qualified" teacher in every classroom. Then the
administration releases a report arguing that the nation's education
schools spend too much time on classroom methodology.

Full Project Description:
The Wilderness Classroom Organization is a non-profit organization which
strives to advocate wilderness conservation, historical appreciation, and
cultural tolerance through bringing our adventures to classrooms via the
Internet.
Beginning in the Fall of 2002, adventure guides, Eric and Dave, will be
updating their website www.wildernessclassroom.org with photos, journals,
videos and classroom activities as they re-trace the Native American and
Voyageur trade routes of northern Minnesota and Canada.
Students have the opportunity to correspond with Dave and Eric via email,
regularly scheduled chat sessions, short text satellite messaging, message
boards, and a poll which determines where they go, and what they do.
Dave and Eric also visit schools before, during, and after the adventure to
talk with students and teachers about wilderness, Internet education, and
their adventures. Please contact them if you would like them to visit your
school.

Objectives:
Students will gain a greater appreciation for wilderness by understanding
the natural world.

Students will learn about Native American life, past and present.

Students will learn about the fur trade and the colonization of North
America.

Students will interact with other students through email, chat room, and
other interactive media.

Students will develop applicable and constructive computer skills.

Students will strengthen math skills through calculating distance travelled
and other calculations.

Students will develop and strengthen critical thinking skills by solving
real life problems as they use online polls to direct their adventure
guides.

Students will gain appreciation for songs, stories, and arts and crafts of
the Voyageurs and native people of the Boreal Forest.

UWC SUPERCOMPUTER SWITCHED ON
On July 8, the first supercomputer in Africa devoted exclusively to research
was switched on at the University of the Western Cape. The Cray SV1 will be
used for tasks including the search for greater understanding of HIV. The
computer works at lightening speeds-several gigaflops. A gigaflop is a
billion operations per second. The supercomputer was installed originally to
help Africa become competitive in the field of genome analysis. But already
new uses have been found such as making cars safer, predicting severe
storms, creating life-saving drugs and probing the shape of the universe.

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Sent: Tue, 9 Jul 2002 13:24:43 EDT

Greetings Native Village Readers and Friends!

You are invited to a birthday event!

August 20th marks the 8th birthday of Miracle, the Sacred White Buffalo. Her
importance to Indian people, as well
as all the world's people, cannot be understated--Miracle is the manifestation of
prophecy. If you are not familiar with
her story, please visit her official website. Miracle, the Sacred White Buffalo.

Native Village editors, Valerie Crow and Gina Boltz, and Miracle's official
webmistress, Stephanie Schwartz, would like
you to join us for the celebration! If you cannot attend the ceremonies, we invite
you to join others in spirit by sending your
birthday prayer or message to Miracle. We will compile your writings into a special
birthday book for Miracle and forward
it to Dave and Valerie Heider, Miracle's guardians. Miracle's birthday book will then
be held in the prayer circle during
birthday ceremonies, and later displayed in MIracle's little gift shop.

We are grateful to the Heiders for accepting and supporting our plans for this
birthday card.

If you would like to participate, simply visit the Native Village website, follow the
links, and type up your birthday wishes.

 Thank you!
 Stephanie, Valerie, and Gina

P.S. Your messages are for Miracle's birthday book only. We respect your private
words for her and will not post
your comments at our site or on the web.
