Registration is now open for The Square of Life:
Studies in Local and Global Environments. Square of
Life has been running twice a year since 1999 and
schools from all over the world have participated.

In this project, which begins on September 9, K-6
students will plot square meters in their school yards
and record the living and non-living things that are
found therein. They will submit this information to
the project database for all to view. Students will
then compare and contrast their information with that
submitted by other classes and prepare a brief report
or presentation that will be posted to the project web
site.
For more information, including project lesson
plans,implementation suggestions, and students'
reports from previous years, please go to the project
web site:

August 9, 2002

Dear Teachers,

It's the start of another school year and some exciting changes are
taking place at Turner Learning. We're re-focusing the format of CNN
Student News and will begin offering curriculum tools for appropriate
episodes of the award-winning program CNN Presents.

The enhancements to CNN Student News will start on Monday, September
16th. (The show will be off the air until then) Here are some of the
changes we have planned that will make this program easier for you to
use in the classroom:

- A shorter program formatted with natural teaching breaks.
- Topics and stories that are rooted in current events
- Website tools that are more tightly integrated with the on-air
segments
- Segment to air overnight on CNN Headline News and feature Headline
News anchors

Also new this school year, Turner Learning will be producing curriculum
associated with the in-depth series CNN Presents. In addition to its
regular 8pm Saturday airing, appropriate episodes of the program will be
aired commercial free overnight on CNN specifically so you can record
them for use in the classroom. The related curriculum will be targeted
to specific grade levels and be available on the CNN Student News web
site. A schedule for all of the educational airings of CNN Presents will
be posted on the Student News website as soon as its available.

We'll be communicating with you each week between now and September
16th. In the meantime, you can get all the details on the new and
improved CNN Student News and the new CNN Presents curriculum by reading
the press release at www.cnnstudentnews.com. Also, please take the time
to reply to this email and let us know how we can make these educational
tools work better for you.

Have a great start to the year,

Joy Rosen
VP, Business Development
Turner Learning

To: The Education Community
From: Senator Edward M. Kennedy's Education Staff
Re: Impact of Budget Cuts on Schools and Students
Date: August 8, 2002

The U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions is
surveying the impact of state and local budget deficits on elementary,
secondary, and higher education. We know that schools and communities
are facing great challenges -- overcrowded classrooms, teacher
shortages, lack of professional development opportunities for teachers,
and lack of after-school programs. Universities and colleges are
raising tuition and fees, cutting courses, and eliminating staff
positions.

Members of the Senate would like to track this issue and the staff
requests for your assistance. Please forward stories that you are
hearing from those you represent on what is occurring in specific states
and communities. While compiling this information, we would appreciate
it if you could try to answer the following questions.

K-12 EDUCATION

Background on state/school district:
* How many students does the state/school district serve?
* What percentage of students are in special populations (e.g.
free and reduced price lunch, specific minority groups, limited English
proficient, and special education)?

BUDGET CUTS:
* How much money is being cut from the K-12 education budget?
* What is the percentage difference from the previous year's
budget?
* How will this impact funding levels for specific education
programs?
* Will courses or programs not be offered due to budget
constraints?

TEACHERS:
* How will cuts impact teachers in that community?
* Will teachers be laid off? How many?
* Will reading specialists, paraprofessionals, and other roles be
eliminated due to cuts? How many?
* Will professional development programs be cut? How many fewer
teachers will participate?
* Will teachers have to take on more classes and responsibilities?
* Will teacher salaries decrease or remain flat?
* Will class sizes increase? If so, by how much?

IDEA:
* Has the number of special education children increased from the
previous year?
* Will budget cuts impact the level of service or programs
provided to students with disabilities? If yes, how? Will your school
district be forced to eliminate or scale back any related services being
provided to children with disabilities?
* Will cuts in this year's school budget force dollars to be
shifted away from the general education budget to cover special
education? If yes, what portion of funds?
* Will the special education teacher "caseload" of students with
disabilities increase due to budget cuts or rises in enrollment? If
yes, by how much (what is the special education teacher to student
ratio)?

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS:
* Will additional learning opportunities be affected due to cuts?
* If so, how many students will be denied extended learning
opportunities?

OTHER:
* Has your school district been forced to defer the purchase of
materials, textbooks, or equipment due to budget cuts?

HIGHER EDUCATION

Background on institution
* How many students attend? Please specify full-time and
part-time.
* How many students receive financial aid? What share of that aid
is need-based aid?
* What is the size of the faculty and administration staff?

IMPACT OF BUDGET CUTS:
* How much money will be cut from the budget and what is the
difference from the previous budget?
* How much will tuition increase because of cuts, in dollars and
percentages? (Please specify tuition, room and board and in-state and
out-of-state students)
* How much will fees increase, in dollars and percentages?
* How will staffing be affected by cuts? (Please specify
administrative, professors, teaching assistants and librarian cuts)
* Will courses not be offered due to budget cuts?
* Will fewer students be enrolled? If so, how many?

Please forward us information by Monday, August 23, 2002. Thank you for
your cooperation. If you have any questions, please contact Dana
Fiordaliso in the Office of Senator Kennedy at 202-224-5501.
