Be fair, Wes - that's basically a paraphrase of RFC 1905, (section 2.3, second para). As I mentioned yesterday, it's phrased in terms of SNMPv2 terminology, and has clearly not been updated in the light of SNMPv3. That's something I noticed when I first read through Stallings' book. It very much came over as three separate sections that had been lumped together, with no real attempt made to merge them properly. That's partly why I've gone to so much trouble to contrast the three versions, to bring out where the similarities lie, and where they differ. I'd also criticise the phrasing of the passage that Gemma quotes. It's not at all easy to follow. When I think of the blood, sweat and tears I've expended - writing and re-writing text so that it reads clearly, I could weep....... :-( Dave ------------------------------------------------------- This SF.Net email is sponsored by: NEC IT Guy Games.
