Netatalk & Long User names

Hello,

Is there anyhope that I will be able to use long
usernames (longer than 8 characters, ie tihen.bill) in
the near future with Netatalk?  

On my mail server the students are enjoying having a
meaningful username (on the mail server they are only
allowed to use pop and imap, but they work fine with
long usernames -- why doesn't netatalk?
