Hi.
Concerning server speeds, we have found through extensive tests that
you can build Linux/netatalk boxes which out perform ASIP, WinNT, and
Win2000 by a significant margin. PCs are about getting the 'bits'
(Processor, Motherboard, Ethernet etc) to work properly together. We
have struck a formula with Intel Lancewood motherboards and various
other parts which work very well as a Linux/netatalk server. The same
hardware running WinNT or 2000 performs very well, but not as well as
netatalk.
As for ASIP, it is very fast because the hardware you run it on is
already 'tuned', but if you know what you are doing, you can get
netatalk to run faster - esp when you start to have large
groups/heavy users. We have proven this time and time again to people
who 'only want Apple hardware', or 'will only deploy Windows NT in
our load balancing group due to support standards in our office
group', and other such comical IT speak.
