I use Fedora. I switched to it after years of using Debian. I prefer
having access to more up to date software between major version updates
of the OS and Fedora provides that.

I'm trying NixOS on a laptop but I'm not that good at organizing things
so I will probably bounce off of it. I may try Asahi Linux on my m2
macBook.

Snap is dead. Flatpak is being pushed hard.

App-store-ification is an antipattern. If you've seen discussions of
"sideloading" software onto phones recently that just means installing
software you want to on hardware that you own without having to ask an
App Store for permission. The power of language etc.

I am very wary of the "just bundle everything you need into a container"
model of software development that snap/flatpak are part of. It's going
to cause problems in a few years, not least by having the opposite
effect of the one it looks like it's meant to and making it only
possible to target a few consistent environments, like Gnome's.

Mostly I just need a UNIX userland and something to run emacs and
Firefox on. Maybe I should switch to one of the BSDs lol.
