I have the dark-on-dark thing on a HP N40L here, and use this in my
boot.cfg:
userconf=disable radeon*
You should be to press a key when the NetBSD boot loader starts, enter
then, then hopefully (if your problem is the same as mine) when you boot
you'll get readable text.
