As iptables can run on a 20Mb machine on a 2mbit line with about 2000
concurrent connections by 100 users, I conclude, it isn't using a lot;
512Mb should clearly be enough!
You RAM is probably used for buffers and cache; which is perfectly fine.
If that RAM should be needed, it will be freed almost immediately.
