What did your C2600 do? Only routing? Any routing protocols running on it?

See, your original question doesn't make sense at all. You say you want to
use netfilter to have some feedback of the traffic on the machine. What
do you mean by that? AFAIK, netfilter is a filter/nat tool, there are some
nice logging functionality there too but if you're only interested in
"having some feedback of the traffic", do it with snort (www.snort.org).
In case you want to do dynamic routing do it with either gated or zebra
(www.zebra.org). For traffic control you'll need to do some research
on iproute2 package.
