Wow, thanks for the very detailed reply and code stubs!  I'll dig into them 
and see what I run into.  I figured the JS-based simulation engine was 
probably the bottleneck, but nice to hear you've thrashed the renderer and 
it can keep up.

Conceivably, but that sounds terrifying to me.

Yeah, wouldn't be my first choice, but I've written enough print/display 
drivers and vector format interpreters in a past life to consider it if a 
mechanism existed... ;)
