I have tried to bend realplayer around c2k, but with no practical outcome [:( ] I did get a realplayer alternative to work, but it could not pick up streaming media like the BBC's. It's all down to Hewit Packard blocking the ports..... port 554 for RTSP/TCP data.
and possibly ports 6970 through 6999 (inclusive) for RTP/UDP data. This may be why realplayer has difficulty streaming from BBC even on the lesser managed side.
other programs? you could make requests if you want! I am more than happy to forward software requests to the user forum.

PS the audacity program lets you record from a mike or tape and export as mp3 file. This might be handy for any linguist who wishes to distribute mp3 files for students to listen to on their ipod/mp3 device.

I am also a convert to firefox (it's the tabbed browsing). I even use it on the managed side (interested?)
Firefox also has a quick proxy switch that can be downloaded as a plug in. A little P button appears in the corner of firefox which you can press to jump between c2k proxy and no proxy. A word of warning though, do not upgrade to firefox 1.5.x as it requests for the proxy username and password every time a new page loads.
I wrote the IE script so that other programs on my computer would not get confused as they look to IE for their proxy settings.

I've chosen to use firefox in school and have set the proxy accordingly. Whereas I use internet explorer at home (set for direct connection to the internet).

Something which annoys me is the need to play about with Internet explorer settings on the unmanaged side of a laptop (or a non c2k laptop) when I am going from school to home or home t o school. So I wrote a script which switches the proxies in an easier way. Download it here :

Unzip. Then pop them somewhere like your desktop and just double click when needed. It is set up to switch off the proxy in IE and the other is to switch it on. It was written for proxy.local but can easily be changed for proxy3........ Just open it with notepad and change it.

PS Another solution might be to not take my work home with me. I shall maybe try this next month and let you know if it is just as effective.
