That's pretty impressive stuff! Can we provide with a list of software we'd
like ... I'm think RealPlayer would be number one - although why the BBC insist
on using it I'll never know!

thanks alot Stephen,
Andrew

Firefox, google earth, mp3 recording software........ on the managed side.

Make sure you are set up as an advanced teacher user (you need to save to, and
run .exe files from the desktop).

download a little package I made up for you here
<http://www.sciencepebbles.com/package.zip>

Extract the contents to your desktop.

The shortcuts on your desktop should work now.

PS the audacity program lets you record from a mike or tape and export as mp3
file. This might be handy for any linguist who wishes to distribute mp3 files
for students to listen to on their ipod/mp3 device.

Have fun.

        Brian,

I am also a convert to firefox (it's the tabbed browsing). I even use
it on the managed side (interested?)

Firefox also has a quick proxy switch that can be downloaded as a plug
in. A little P button appears in the corner of firefox which you can press to
jump between c2k proxy and no proxy. A word of warning though, do not upgrade
to firefox 1.5.x as it requests for the proxy username and password every time
a new page loads.

I wrote the IE script so that other programs on my computer would not
get confused as they look to IE for their proxy settings.

        Stephen,

I've been having the same problem, but found another solution - simply
install the firefox browser: http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/

I've chosen to use firefox in school and have set the proxy
accordingly. Whereas I use internet explorer at home (set for direct
connection to the internet).

I'd check out your script with interest all the same.

                Colleagues,

Something which annoys me is the need to play about with
Internet explorer settings on the unmanaged side of a laptop (or a non c2k
laptop) when I am going from school to home or home t o school. So I wrote a
script which switches the proxies in an easier way. Download it here :

                http://www.sciencepebbles.com/proxyswitch.zip

Unzip. Then pop them somewhere like your desktop and just
double click when needed. It is set up to switch off the proxy in IE and the
other is to switch it on. It was written for proxy.local but can easily be
changed for proxy3........ Just open it with notepad and change it.

I find it useful, someone else might.

                Stephen

PS Another solution might be to not take my work home with me.
I shall maybe try this next month and let you know if it is just as effective.
