We have just bought a C2K Laptop from Northgate at the price you gave below (add VAT if you pay VAT). The price includes £230 for C2K build and licences to all software on the network. It is a Dell 110L with 512M RAM and 80G HD and carry case.
I priced recently the same computer for standalone use directly with Dell and including Office Professional licence and 3year on site warranty. The price was very similar to the C2K offering.
I have often found that when everything is factored in the prices are not that different. It is always possible to get cheaper hardware but unless you have the technical resources at hand then support when things go wrong can often be difficult or expensive.

Have any of you recently purchased a laptop to be built as a C2k workstation? I am very loath to pay a C2k price of £989 for a laptop which sells on the Internet for £500ish. I have contacted Northgate and they (obviously) will not give me a make they will build, wishing only to sell their own (what’s new?). First they gave me a spec, but when I sourced a HP laptop they said they couldn’t guarantee it would build and it may then cost more than £245 (first quote) to build it into a C2k station. They gave me a spec well above the E500 (am using this to type this e-mail, which is already built as a C2k station!) This is an unbelievable monopoly!
Any help gratefully accepted!
