I have
found when I shut a machine down in this way it can cause problems. I get
a message to say that windows was not shut down properly and when you try any
of the suggested options you end up in a loop. End result is a rebuild of
the machine and a lot of hassle!
Surely a
facility for a local administrator to log a user out would be a lot more
sensible???
Yes, this would be my observation also –
hence the reason why I tend to jump up and down!

I
was under the impression that if you pressed the button on the front of ta c2k
computer it ran a shutdown sequence, in the same way as START _ SHUTDOWN
would. It certainly seems to. However, we encourage our students to
go START _ _ SHUTDOWN instead of using the button. This is because; if
they get into the habit of using the button then they could easily damage some
non c2k machines where the button really does mean OFF!
So... I agree, I just press the button. However, I don't worry about it
:) If the person losses work, it will teach them to log off.

I asked for this issue to
be looked into some time ago. Usually I jump up and down then switch off
hoping that nothing serious will go wrong! Not to be recommended but
often the only solution at short notice.

Subject: Locked Workstations
Can anybody tell me how to unlock a station that a
member of staff has left without logging out?
I contacted the help desk and they suggested that it was
only possible for an administrator (ie Northgate) to do this.
We are looking at the possibility of using Lesson
Monitor next year and there could be a lot of problems if stations can't be
easily unlocked.

Peter McQuillan
