Yes, you can call between versions. It's best to use the same version, though -- expecially if you both have 3.01 the audio and video quality is better.

There are some minor incompatibilities in application sharing and whiteboard, though. I think those are covered in the Readme file.
 
IVisit is one that does multiple participants without using a server.
 
If you have a server the audio and video quality is better, though. CUSeeMe is the long-standing favorite in that camp.
