The Microsoft Internet Directory search only searches Microsoft ILS servers.
The directory you search is totally separate from the directory you log into
( you could make them the same but the functions of logging in and searching
are distinct)
Each ILS server is a seperate entity ( it is not a system -- any one can run
an ILS and there is no central coordination) - only in the latest
incarnation does Microsoft effectively tie what used to be ( and still is
for NM V2 users) ils 1-5.microsoft.com together and search them as a unit.
The people on those ( Microsoft's) servers are a small fraction of the
people online using ILS servers which are in turn a small fraction of the
people online running Netmeeting.
I, and many other users never use the ILS servers but get and make many
calls in a day. http://www.meetingbywire.com/NetMeeting101.htm has an
explanation of what an ILS server does and has large number of alternate
connection strategies that do not involve the ILS that can loosely be
categorized into groups:
1)Messenging programs that provide presence and instant messenging
capability ( and sometimes direct Netmeeting calling) -- MSN Messenger, AIM,
ICQ fall into this category
2)Dynamic name services that provide fixed names for people with dynamic
addresses (TZO, Dynip are exambles)
3)Web based connection methods ( Meetspace, Camcrowd fall into this
category- as does the sample connection page at
http://www.meetingbywire.com/V3ContactCenter.htm )
4)ILS based calling ( usually with a hidden login) -- well this is not a non
ILS method but is different from the way most people use the ILS
The only reason for searching an ILS is to find a random party to talk to --
the only reason for listing yourself openly is to have a random party call.
I personally have never used NetMeeting that way - and I venture to say a
large number of NetMeeting users are the same.
