I know this thread is moving away from Netmeeting per se, however, it may be
of some use to some subscribers to list some of the successes (and failures)
from the experiences of the group to offer a view of how listed cameras
operate with Netmeeting, and other applications, including known
compatibility issues/clashes/workarounds.
For a start I use two different USB cameras...............
Camera 1
a Philips pca645svc which I believe has been superceded by the Vista or
VistaPro(??)
It came with a floppy and a cd. After installation, the camera wasn't
recognised until I went to the Philps site and downloaded a new/ updated
driver for Windows 98 after which it has worked very well.
I have not had any problem with Netmeeting 3.01 with this camera and the
quality of the picture under fairish (ambient) fluorescent & daylight has

sample image, uploaded by webcam32 without any probs although I have had
some difficulty with a different web cam application ( although I don't
believe the prog fell over because of the camera))
Camera 2
Is an Omnivision USB camera, which I inherited from a friend who couldn't
get it to work with Netmeeting.
I have had some difficulty with this camera although I believe the
difficulty arises out of a clash between the VFW and WMD drivers. I think if
you call one directly from the application "wincap" which is supplied with
the cd before the other one, (and I cant tell you whicch one first!)
applications such as Netmeeting and Webcam32 are quite stable, but more
often than not, applications which were not supplied on the CD will freeze
pretty early in use. the install prog also failed to load "intel.sys" ( or a
file with a similar name , which was a clue I picked up from the Intel site
troubleshooter for USB camera issues)
I have set up Netmeeting between two computers on a Network at home with the
two cameras and had some success, but there are fairly major difficulties
with the Omnivision camera and I couldn't recommed it for Netmeeting use.
The comparison shot on the web page is slightly skewed in that I took the
Omnivision picture first thing in the morning in poor light, (the second
machine sits in an alcove in the corner of the room, and the focusing ring
could have been better set, however, the definition and sharpness of image
are a very poor second to the Philips.
For the record I use Windows 98 second edition and Netmeeting 3.01, ( as a
test I installed 2.01 to use with the Omnivision camera which comes on the
Omnivision Cd but that wasn't any better)
Marks out of 10 : Philips-: 8 ( I would like a zoom lens >) ) Omnivision -:
3 ( it can be used quite successfully with the accompanying software but
little else without major user experimentation and ingenuity)
