You need a DHCP server to translate machine names to IP addresses. You
likely have one on your LAN, which is why you can use the machine
name when you use NetMeeting on the LAN. When you are on the internet,
it's a different story. There is no machine name-to-IP address translation
per-se, unless you use a some sort of directory server, as has been
discussed recently. If you log into a directory server, the directory
server will capture your IP address and associate a "name" with it.
Other people connecting to the directory server can use that "name"
to contact you.
