When I check manual select I indeed see a list of available codecs
but I still wonder if the one that is shown now (grayed out when manual is
not checked) is the right one for me?

That would be my opinion -- the only time selecting a faster bandwidth
setting would produce "better" audio is if the other party was an a
broadband ( or connected via your local LAN) connection and they also had a
higher bandwidth setting.
