For desktop sharing there is always VNC. For application sharing you could
set up RDP (formerly Terminal Services) using profiles and policies to offer
access only to (a) certain environment / application(s) which could go some
way to simulating application sharing, but this is more complex and is at a
sys admin rather than end user level... 

Of course, for desktop sharing, app sharing (and more) there is always
Citrix - but this is also at a sys admin level and far from free...

are you aware of a free, multiplatform application that does desk-top 
and application sharing as neatly as NetMeeting? OK. apart from Windows 
Messenger :-)
