You should visualize IPMP as a virtual IP interface which groups several
other IP interfaces on the same link, not a virtual link-layer (the term
NIC should be avoided completely, unless you're really concerned about
physical hardware operations like hot-swapping out a card).  802.3ad link
aggregation provides similar functionality at the link-layer.
