Part of the fun of ifconfig syntax is that the above command actually
means "try to put every interface on the machine into group 'a'".

I'd be very leery of any sort of user interface change for ifconfig
that ends up with context-sensitive parameters like that.  Having
"group" mean two different things in two slightly different usages
seems unnecessarily hazardous to me.
