I did something similar in another life to support mapping serial
traffic to appropriate ports on a terminal server. Additional gain in
that application was the ability to do protocol snooping and logging.
In both cases the ability to dynamically change mappings without having
to either build that logic into the applications or reset the
application is a nice win.
