That's a bit of an over-generalisation. Most apps on the OpenSolaris
desktop *do* use it. (Even Mozilla used to, although we seem to have
decided not to carry that patch across into Firefox.) So perhaps you
ought to clarify exactly what class of applications you're interested in
solving the problem for...?

I guess the "class of apps" is not really defined... We just want
to make most apps, graphical or not, work with NWAM seamlessly if
possible. And I guess most people will consider Firefox to be an
important app to work with NWAM. Do you have a suggestion on this
issue if patching Firefox to use the GConf key may not be an option?

Has anyone considered creating a local proxy that would
handle this? Apps would always use the local proxy; it's
configuration would be updated dynamically by
NWAM/user. We could ameliorate possible performance issues
by adding the ability to "splice" sockets together
in the kernel once the connections were established.

Splice sockets together...kind of like an in-kernel relay of
packets? Does anyone, anywhere, do this? Sounds interesting...
