Solaris currently lacks an interface to add custom implementations of socket address families, types and protocols to the kernel without modifying the kernel source.

Although the necessary datastructures are provided in the kernel (sockfs), the different available implementations are chosen in a hardcoded way.

Therefore, I propose a new project "Pluggable Sockets" that adds such an interface. Discussions between Sun networking group and my company resulted in a design concept that has been drafted.
