Follow-up to whomever may be following along.

Setting the bge.conf back to an MTU of 9000 and a fresh reboot seems to have 
allowed a default MTU of 9000, as it should have the first times I've tried 
this.  Granted I had tried this once before without working, maybe my stars 
aligned today, but at least it's working properly now.  

Throughput with a 9000 MTU in my setup over NFS is almost double that of the 
8000 MTU even though the transmission window isn't much larger, virtually 
nothing is fragmented nor resent now.
