Can you verify that you don't have duplicate MAC addresses on different 
NICs? Sounds like a switch's ARP tables might be getting messed up. 
Haven't seen that on x86, only on SPARC with local-mac-address?=false

Unless you are using exclusive IP Instances, pings between zones on a 
system will not leave the system (neither global to non-global nor 
non-global to global).
