James,
Thank you! I was aware of /var/svc/log, so I was already checking the
network/physical:default log, but I wasn't aware of svcs -x; that's useful
additional info.

I'm not 100% certain what the magic bit was; I deleted my hostname from
/etc/hosts, re-verified my /etc/dhcp.e1000g0 and /etc/hostname.e1000g0 files,
rebooted, and it finally worked. I think the problem may have been that when I
did sys-unconfig, it put the hostname I was using for the interface in
/etc/hosts associated with the loopback adapter. On the hostname being in
/etc/hostname.interfacename; I had typo'd that in my post, though I saw bits
where folks talked about just putting a bare hostname in that file, without the
"inet" keyword.

I'm still unsure about why sys-unconfig didn't prompt me for any info on the
network. Someone suggested I needed to make sure the interface was plumbed
before running sys-unconfig, which makes a certain amount of weird sense.

At this point, I've got dhcp working with hostname being transmitted into DNS,
NIS client, automount, NFS server and Samba server working, so it looks like
I'm actually good to go.
