Edit /etc/rc.d/rc.local, and change the line: /usr/bin/linux_logo -c -n -o 2 >> /etc/issue to read: /usr/bin/linux_logo -gu >> /etc/issue That'll leave the compilation and system info on the screen but kill Tux.
