Thanks for replies to my posts.  Taking given suggestions, I attempted install again.

1.  Set partitions to 100M swap, 1000M / (growable), formatted, install failed with sig 11 during format of hda1 (/).

2.  Tried again, same parameters, same result.

3.  Tried again, this time selected 'check for bad blocks during format'. Format went well, package install started, made it to about 20%, then "install exited abnormally - received signal 11 sending termination signals...etc., etc."

4.  Fourth try, went into BIOS, did low level format, re-booted from CD, initialized drive, set partitions to 100M swap and 1000M /, selected minimal packages and started install.  Ended with:  error occurred during step "Configure mouse".

5.  OK, decided to revert to RH 6.0.  Re-booted, set same partitions, formatted, and began install.  Result: flawless installation, everything works, including my network and X.  What was different this time?  Only that I did not install KDE (note:  all of my 'minimal' installs include SMB, since the box must connect with an NT network).  Could KDE be the root of this problem?

In answer to questions raised by Bernhard:  Caches are turned on in BIOS, CPU has never been overclocked.

If my problems stem from a hardware source, then the hardware is only affected by some package or process included in L-M 6.0 that is not included in RH 6.0.  Hmmm... I guess the same could be said if the problem derives from software.

I have about three hairs left...  should I keep them, or try again?

Thanks,

Greg
