I would recommend if you are dead set on booting into a graphical logon to run
kdm from the /etc/rc.d/rc.local file...put it below the very last line ie
/opt/kde/bin/kdm  of course your path may be different...just remember that 1.
be absolutly positive that X and Kde are working and 2. that if for what ever
reason you need to change X or Kde or Video cards to comment that line out
BEFORE you reboot...for obvious reasons!!
