hello,

i would like to know how to get my zip drive working on my system.

here is a list of the things i have done:

- installed Mandrake6 on a fresh pentium pro 200mhz, 72 mb RAM, creative
labs infra 1800 cd-rom, soundblaster16 sound card, generic 33.6 modem from
old compaq computer, ctx 1451es monitor, generic 3 button serial mouse, at
keyboard with ps/2 adapter, fic6010 motherboard, iomega internal atapi zip
drive 100mb, 2.0gig samsung hard drive

- during the install i was able to see the kernel detect my zip drive as
"hdb": it is a slave to my hard drive

- i tried to find the drive in the kde device manager (i am not sure what it
is called, i just know that i could mount and unmount different drives and
file systems through mount and unmount buttons) that shows which drives are
mounted: did not see "hdb" or any other similar device (i was also looking
for sdb possibly on account of some vague information gathered from various
internet sites, deja.com, ldp, etc.)

- i tried recompiling my kernel as instructed in the linux documentation
project's HOWTO on the zip drive

- i also followed the external link to the linuxgazette tip offered in the
HOWTO: this tip said to recompile the kernel with scsi support rather than
with the ide-atapi-floppy support (i did this using "make xconfig" "make
dep" "make clean" "make zImage" "make modules" "make modules_install" "make
zlilo")

- after rebooting, i still saw the "hdb" recognized as the internal zip
drive, but no scsi device detection as the tip suggested

- i have recompiled the kernel about 10 times now trying to find the correct
options for the detection of the drive as a scsi device that i can mount and
eject disks from (the linuxgazzette tip suggested doing it this way so that
one could use some "eject" utility that would keep one from damaging the
drive due to improper unmounting)

- i have nothing important on the system as yet, and am willing to reinstall
if there is a way to do things from the installation

- i have not made a mount point yet due to the fact that i couldn't find the
drive anywhere

i will not be upset if i am told that the fix is relatively easy, i would
just like to use the programs i downloaded onto the disks i have.

many thanx,
michael
