Are you using an internal modem or external? If it's external, you might try
turning off and on again. But a better way might be to see if anything is using
the serial port/irq. Sometimes when it reports modem busy, it's not the modem
that's busy...(don't ask :-))
As for not messing with LILO...hmm...I'm quite sure you must have - you might
just not know it (eg. at install time?) :-)
