Amazing! As soon I finished writing the below message I checked out the
news:alt.os.linux.mandrake  newsgroup and found this:

+++++++++++
I had luck with uninstalling:
sndconfig
sox
rhsound

Download the same from redhat, or get from redhat 6 cd. Yes these are
.i386 packages.

And then installing:
rhsound
sox
sndconfig

I have seen other fixes listed also, from aliases to a different
driver, to recompiling the kernel. I have dis-remembered the details
though...

Good luck
+Pablo+
+++++++++++

....so I followed Pablo's instructions and now my PCI128 sound card works in
Venus. I hope this will help the other folks who've previously reported
this problem as well as those who run into the problem in the future.

    Bernard....I have a Creative PCI128 (ensonic 1371) and have seen many
messages since the release of Venus concerning the fact that sndconfig in
Venus will not install this card even though the exact same card worked fine
in RedHat 5.2 & 6.0 as well as Linux Mandrake 5.2 & 5.3.  My PCI128 worked
fine with the aforementioned distributions too. Sndconfig bombs out on me at
the test file phase. I've never seen an answer to this problem posed in
this list or elsewhere (did I miss something?), so I am asking for a fix.
Please!! I have the GPL disc from Circadian Software and since sndconfig
bombed during my sound install l've installed the updated sox but it didn't
help. You comment to me in another correspondence that, "Most other bugs
are either not very important or specific to some relatively rare hardware"
does not seem relevant to this soundcard problem because the Creative
PCI64/128 (Ensonic 1371) is hardly rare.
