Try raising the modem volume under kppp. I had the same problem with an
external 56k USR modem. I had the volume cranked up but couldn't hear
anything. Loaded kppp and checked modem settings and sure enough, the modem
volume was turned down.

As for your ppp problem, double check whether its PAP or login scripts
required.
