If you look at the FAQ section on the Linux-Mandrake site at: 
http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/ffaq.php3

It says:

How to set the 16bpp mode as default the default color-depth (65535 colors) in 
X-Window? 
Insert this line in your XF86Config file: 
DefaultColorDepth 16 


This file should be in /etc/X11
Remember to make a backup copy first in case anything goes wrong.
