What happened to you looks similar to what happened to me (and destroyed my partition table). I couldn't even access my linux partitions anymore, and couldn't fix it until I reformatted my hard drives. I suggest that when you use Partition Magic, don't create linux partitions, but rather create free space, then use disk Druid (or fdisk, if you prefer) to specify the ext2fs filesystem. That worked for me, and no more partition problems. One more thing, maybe I'm off-base, but what is the point of a separate /root partition? It seems that there should be no problem leaving /root as a part of /.
