My suggestion:
Open Xmms and go to: Options > Preference > Audio Cdreader > Configure > Output > and mark Read Digital CD Audio.

I,ve gone thur the same thing and I do have the
xmms-cdreader in fact sounds and cd,s work in other
players but xmms I can,t seem to get anything to work. JOE
