Very hard to tell although the usual caveats about hardware (in particular, the seating of DIMMs) come to mind. There could also have been a minor (mains) power glitch. If it's any consolation, this happening _repeatedly_ (in both Win2K and WinXP) was why I gave up Windows. The machine was gone over with a fine-tooth comb, to the extent of someone who knew their stuff applying a HP oscilloscope to the components and collecting and examining data, and we could never find out what was wrong. The possibility of work vanishing without warning was too much, and it was either 'ditch the machine or change to a completely different OS'. Thereafter, needless to say, M8.2 ran perfectly on the same hardware.
