Possible answers from an ATT Not so Borad Band user.  Only get 176KB  :(

1.  The cable company needs to know the mac address of the router not the  
     modem.  Don't tell em its a router but NIC Card.

2. install the nic cards in each machine.

3. Set up Windows networking and Linux to use DHCP.
   There is no need for sending the host name.

4. The linksys will assign addresses for the machines in the order thier      
    booted.

I have 3 Windows (various flavors) and one Linux running fine this way.
