Have you tried ps aux ?? There are often processes running that don't show up in top...and a process that has not gone zombie can be stopped ( kill -HUP <process id> , kill -15 <process id> , or kill -9 <process id> ), allowing you to restart the program (most of the time) without a log out/in....
