You're going to need to install SDL and the SDL dev libs as well - once you do that, retry the compile - you should be good to go from that point. If you're still having problems, edit the /etc/ld.so.conf file and include /usr/lib and /usr/local/lib - then run ldconfig - then try to do the ./configure, make, make install again.
