After migrating to another box, I found OO would open for all users but
only root could print (see previous post). After trying various
remedies unsuccessfully (deleting ~/.openoffice, rerunning setup, trying
with a brand new user etc.) I uninstalled the OO rpms and reinstalled
it. My reward for trying this Windows-like approach is that now,
whether as root or a normal user, OO starts to open, gets as far as the
splash screen, then crashes. Running setup produces a slew of error
messages saying it can't copy various files in /usr/lib/openoffice/user
to ~/.openoffice . (this is using the RPMs that come with 9.0, BTW -
funny thing is that they worked fine on the original box).

Has anyone had a similar experience? Searching the OO archives didn't
produce anything useful.

Sir Robin

THe only similarity that I had was OO started to do the same thing to me as the second half of your description above. However, I cleaned out anything that I could find that looked like OO stuff and then reinstalled. That cured my problem.
Thanks - that got me back with a working OO, but I still can't print as an ordinary user. The print command is the usual lpr thingy, just like all other programs. Time to join the OO mailing list, I suppose - this is too esoteric for me!

The annoting thing is that I hardly ever use OO for anything I need to print - I use LyX as my main writing tool, and OO for spreadsheets and to read Word documents people send me, but having something similar to Word on the office Linux box is part of my "hearts and minds" campaign. To misquote the current US slogan in Iran, "Think of Tux as a friend".
