But qcad is only 2D. On the bright side, a browse around somewhere like Sourceforge will reveal a number of 3D CAD projects in the making. There are also a lot of specialist CAD tools around (mainly related to engineering) - they wouldn't be much use to someone looking for an AutoCAD substitute, but since a number of them are Open Source, the code base could be of use to other projects, perhaps.

In other words, the bad news is that there is still no substitute for AutoCAD; the good news is that if you wait a year or so, there almost certainly will be. We had to wait years for a decent substitute for MS Office, but it arrived in the end.
