Esd is the Enlightened Sound Daemon, see 'man esd'. AFAIK it's a sound 
server daemon from Gnome, like artsd is from/for KDE. These sound servers
allow software mixing of more than one soundstream (like playing a mp3 and
get systems sounds at the same time).
