Rifza; Have you tried using Konqueror in KDE? Not only is it a file
manager, web-browser, and FTP client, but it allows you to drag and drop
entire folders from ftp sites, and manages multiple downloads very
smoothly.

Just a thought, but it's been "bullet-proof" for me.
