I'm guessing that this is not the problem because 1. It's worked fine with Mandake 9.0 and 2. I got to a graphical desktop (as root only) after I modified the XF86Config file (see 3rd try).
Of course, you may know something tha I don't.

So now, whatever I choose from the boot menu (BTW, I'm dual-booting with Win2k), I get command line only with (I believe) a ...-19mdk kernel.
