Pick any mode, tree, multi-column...whatever. It thinks about it, then crashes. Updated KDE & MDK in general...nada. Ideas?

Hi, Femme. I regularly switch between icon and tree view, without problems. Just to see, I tried every view version offered, and all were ok. However, just occasionally Konq does crash for no apparent reason. Once that has happened it is unstable, and I have to log out and back in to clear it. Does that help?
I use 3.1.2 from Texstar and don't seem to have as many crashes as I used to. You may want to give it a try. You also get things like pretty drop shadows on active windows. :-)
